NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team used three power-play goals to ease to a 5-1 non-conference victory over Northland College in its home opener on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (2-1-0) and Northland (0-2-0) were tied at one at the first intermission before the Oles scored back-to-back power-play goals less than three minutes apart in a three-goal second period. In the third, St. Olaf added another power-play tally to finish 3-for-4 on the power play. The three goals on the person advantage were the Oles' most since netting three in a 4-3 overtime win over the College of Saint Benedict on Jan. 12, 2017.
Five different skaters scored and 11 had at least one point for St. Olaf, led by a goal and an assist each from junior
Zephryn Jager and sophomore
Sophie McBane. Sophomore
Hannah Metric and first years
Molly Terebayza and
Emma Aune all netted their first collegiate goals.
Jager got the Oles on the board first at 7:42 of the opening period by thrusting the puck home from in close after sophomore Kat Carfagnini's shot went five hole but did not creep over the line. Jager's goal was her first of the season after starting the season with a pair of assists last weekend.
The LumberJills answered a little over four minutes later when Kate Holtz scored on a rebound off a shot by Kyleigh Moffatt. The teams went into the first intermission tied at 1-1 despite the Oles holding a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Metric tallied the eventual game-winning goal on the power play at 8:36 of the second period, tossing the puck in from the middle of the right circle after McBane drove to the net from down low. Terebayza added another power-play goal just 2:59 later by throwing the puck in off a Northland player from down low on the left side.
Aune capped St. Olaf's three-goal middle period by lifting in a rebound from a sharp angle on the right after junior
Lexie Ligday's drive from the right point produced a rebound. McBane added the lone goal of the final period on the power play at 6:47, tapping the puck in in front after sophomore
Grace Lankas' shot caromed in front off the back boards.
The Oles held a commanding 52-10 advantage in shots on goal in the game, as first year
Hannah Fritz collected her first collegiate win with a nine-save outing. Teagen Johnson made at least 13 saves in each period for Northland and finished with 47 for the game.
The two teams wrap up their non-conference series on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Senior Day for the Oles.
