Berg-Messerole, Terebayza tally five points, Oles close out sweep

SUPERIOR, Wis. – First years Solvei Berg-Messerole and Molly Terebayza both had five-point performances to power the St. Olaf College women's hockey team to a 7-1 victory over UW-Superior to finish off a sweep on Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.

Terebayza had three goals and two assists and Berg-Messerole recorded two goals and three assists for St. Olaf (7-5-1), which recorded its first sweep in the all-time series with UW-Superior (4-7-0) and picked up its third sweep of the season. Senior Maddie Anderson added a goal and an assist for the Oles.

Terebayza and Berg-Messerole's five-point performances are tied for the second-highest single-game point total in program history, trailing only a six-point performance by Margot Fleming '14 against Hamline on Jan. 18, 2014. Terebayza's hat trick was the first by an Ole since Kalli McCullen '19 netted a hat trick against Bethel on Feb. 9, 2019 and the 17th recorded hat trick in program history.

St. Olaf's seven-goal output marked its highest-scoring game since a 7-3 victory over Saint Mary's University on Feb. 17, 2018. The last time the Oles scored more than seven goals in a game was an 8-1 win against the College of Saint Benedict on Feb. 19, 2011.

The Yellowjackets needed just 33 seconds to take a 1-0 lead for the second day in a row on a goal by Emma Booth, but the Oles answered just over four minutes later on Terebayza's first goal of the game. Berg-Messerole gave St. Olaf a 2-1 lead at the first intermission with a power-play goal at the 14:08 mark, which was the first of three power-play goals for the Oles in the win.

Berg-Messerole set up Terebayza's second goal of the game at 4:48 of the second period to push St. Olaf's lead to 3-1 after two periods. Goals from Berg-Messerole and Anderson less than three minutes apart in the first five minutes of the third pushed the Oles' lead to 5-1. Later, St. Olaf tacked on a pair of power-play goals, as Terebayza finished off her hat trick at 6:55 and sophomore Iona Welsch got on the scoresheet at 15:17.

After being beaten on the first shot of the game, sophomore Devon Cole stopped the final 22 shots she faced to remain unbeaten this season at 2-0-1. Abby Pajari had 35 saves in the loss for UW-Superior, as St. Olaf enjoyed a 42-23 advantage in shots on goal in the game. The Oles' three power-play goals matched the team's season-high total and gave St. Olaf five power-play goals on 14 opportunities for the weekend.

St. Olaf returns to action in 2023 with a series against Saint Mary's University, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop in Winona on Friday, Jan. 13.
