ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Sophomore
Zephryn Jager and junior
Annika Patterson each had a goal and an assist and senior
Ivy Shonka made 36 saves to lead the St. Olaf College women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Friday night at Ritschie Arena.
Jager and Patterson scored less than five minutes into the first and third periods to give St. Olaf (8-14-0, 2-13-0 MIAC) a 2-0 lead. Saint Ben's (9-9-1, 5-5-1 MIAC) got a power-play goal from Julia Pias at 12:24 of the third period to make it a one-goal game, but the Oles held on to snap their eight-game losing streak by limiting the Bennies to three shots on goal the rest of the way.
Just 3:45 into the opening period, Jager netted her first collegiate goal off assists from first year
Sophie McBane and Patterson to give the Oles an early 1-0 lead. The sophomore was on hand to poke the puck home from in front of the net as Patterson picked up her team-leading seventh assist of the season.
The score remained 1-0 all the way until Patterson tallied her team-high ninth goal of the season, firing the puck over the CSB goalie's left shoulder at 4:17 of the third period to extend St. Olaf's lead to 2-0. The play started with a blocked shot by first year
Hannah Metric, which sprung Jager and Patterson up the ice. Jager's multi-point game was the first of her collegiate career.
The Bennies capitalized on their fourth power play of the game when Pias scored at 12:24 of the third period to cut the Oles' lead in half. Shonka made three saves over the next three-plus minutes to keep St. Olaf ahead but did not have a save to make over the final 4:30 of the game.
Saint Ben's was called for a cross-checking penalty with 1:46 remaining – the first penalty of the night on the Bennies – to help the Oles close out the win. The hosts pulled their goalie with 15 seconds to go to create a brief 5-on-5 situation but Lily Aamodt's shot in the closing seconds was off target.
Shonka stopped 36 of the 37 shots she faced in net for St. Olaf for her fifth game of the season with at least 30 saves while picking up her fourth victory of the season. Maggie Gilchrist made 19 saves in the loss for Saint Ben's.
The two teams conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
