NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team suffered a 73-64 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College as the Knights claimed possession of the Presidents' Cup by completing a regular-season sweep of the Oles on Saturday afternoon at West Gym.
Carleton (11-12, 10-10 MIAC) never trailed in the game and had four scorers in double figures led by Aiana Whitfield's 19 points. Senior
K'Lynn Lewis led St. Olaf (7-16, 6-14 MIAC) with 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Lewis was 6-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line on the way to her third-straight game in double figures for the Oles. Junior
Rachel Kelly added 13 points and seven rebounds, while first year
Paige Yagodinski hit four three-pointers off the bench to contribute 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
In addition to Whitfield's 19-point afternoon, Jasmie Choi had 18 points, six rebounds, and five steals for the Knights, who collected their sixth-straight win thanks, in part, to a 39-22 advantage in points in the paint. Jill Yanai and Emma Henry each scored 12 points to join Whitfield and Choi in double figures.
By sweeping the two regular-season meetings in the series, the Knights reclaimed the Presidents' Cup, which the Oles possessed after winning both of the head-to-head matchups in the 2018-19 season. St. Olaf maintained possession of the trophy by winning the first of the teams' matchups in 2019-20.
Six different Knights scored in the opening quarter to help Carleton to a 17-10 lead after 10 minutes. The hosts held St. Olaf to one point over the first five-plus minutes in taking an 8-1 lead before Lewis and Kelly hit back-to-back three-pointers to make it a one-point game. The Oles were just 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) from the field in the opening quarter.
Junior
Sophie Olmen had five points in the first four minutes of the second quarter to help St. Olaf trim its deficit to three at 24-21. Yagodinski's second of two made three-pointers in the quarter with 1:22 remaining got the Oles within two, 33-31, before a Yanai layup just before the buzzer sent Carleton into the locker room with a four-point lead.
The Knights used a 6-0 run to turn a three-point lead into a nine-point cushion with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter. The Oles got their deficit back down to four with 1:20 to go in the quarter before Carleton scored the final six points of the frame to take a 10-point lead into the fourth.
Whitfield scored nine of her 19 points in the final quarter, including scoring the first seven points of the quarter, to help the Knights stretch their lead to 17 with 6:24 remaining. Carleton led by at least 10 the rest of the way until first year
Maddie Elstad hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the first points of her collegiate career.
St. Olaf plays its final two games of the regular season at home, starting with a 5:45 p.m. tip-off against Bethel on Monday, Feb. 14.
