Hamline takes series opener from women's hockey

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Hamline University got two goals from Sophie Rausch and a 21-save shutout from Mckenna Hulslander to blank the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, 4-0, in the series opener between the two teams on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After an evenly-played first 16-plus minutes, Hamline (9-7-0, 8-3-0 MIAC) scored twice in the span of 1:08 late in the first period and Rausch netted goals in each of the final two periods for the visitors. St. Olaf (7-13-0, 1-12-0 MIAC) generated 21 shots on goal in the loss, but was shut out for the sixth time in the last seven games.

The Pipers broke through with a power-play goal by Jordan Hansen at 16:40 of the opening period and added a second goal just 68 seconds later on a breakaway goal by Amanda Nylander. The Oles fired nine shots on Hulslander in the opening 20 minutes, including three on a power play midway through the period, but went into the first intermission down by two.

Rausch grabbed her first goal of the night 2:12 into the second period before capping the scoring at 16:58 of the third with an unassisted tally. The two-goal night brought Rausch's season tally to 13, which ranks second in the conference.

Senior Ivy Shonka made 24 saves in the loss for St. Olaf, while Hulslander stopped all 21 shots she faced for Hamline. Sophomore Lexie Ligday had a team-high five shots on goal for the Oles.

The two teams complete their series on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
