K'Lynn Lewis had 11 of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter for the St. Olaf College women's basketball team in a 66-57 loss to visiting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Monday evening at Skoglund Center.
Lewis had her second 20-point performance of the season, going 5-for-12 from behind the arc on the way 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while junior
Rachel Kelly added an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double for St. Olaf (7-14, 6-12 MIAC). Saint Mary's (7-14, 6-12 MIAC) salvaged a split of the regular-season meetings behind a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds from Brooklyn Paulson.
Lewis and Kelly combined for 38 of the Oles' 57 points in the game, as Kelly logged her fifth double-double of the season. Lewis' five three-pointers were a season high, as St. Olaf was 9-for-20 (45.0 percent) from three-point range but just 8-for-20 (40.0 percent) from the free-throw line in the loss.
Paulson – the MIAC's leading scorer by nearly three points per game – was 8-for-20 from the field, including 5-for-13 from behind the arc, and pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Cardinals to a 44-30 rebounding edge. Saint Mary's turned 15 offensive rebounds into a 17-6 advantage in second-chance points in the win to draw even with St. Olaf in the MIAC standings.
The Oles got three-straight three-pointers from Lewis, Kelly, and first year
Sarah Tangen to jump out to an 11-2 lead four minutes in for St. Olaf's largest lead of the game. Paulson hit back-to-back three-pointers on the Cardinals' next two possessions, but the Oles took a 20-13 lead into the second quarter after shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range in the opening 10 minutes. Lewis and Kelly combined for 14 of St. Olaf's 20 points in the quarter.
Paulson connected on three more three-pointers in the second quarter to finish a 17-point half as Saint Mary's outscored St. Olaf by a 19-8 margin to take a 32-28 lead at halftime. The Cardinals were 5-for-10 from long distance in the quarter and held the Oles to just two field goals in the quarter to take a halftime lead after St. Olaf led for over 14 minutes in the half.
A three-point play by Jada Biermeier gave Saint Mary's its largest lead of the game at 47-35 with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter, but St. Olaf scored the final six points of the quarter to go into the fourth down just six. The Oles continued their run early in the fourth, scoring the first eight points of the quarter – including two three-pointers by Lewis – to take a 49-47 lead with 6:34 to go

The lead changed hands six times in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals took the lead for good on back-to-back layups by Biermeier inside the final four minutes. St. Olaf got within one, 57-56, on a jumper by Lewis with 2:52 to go but scored just one point the rest of the way, as Saint Mary's hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
St. Olaf plays its next two games on the road, starting with a trip to Saint Benedict on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
