St. Kate's edges women's tennis in second-straight regionally-ranked matchup

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In its second-straight matchup of regionally-ranked teams, the St. Olaf College women's tennis team was edged, 6-3, by St. Catherine University on Friday evening at Baseline Tennis Center.

St. Kate's (8-2, 5-1 MIAC) won two of the three doubles matches and won the first three singles matches to finish to secure the team victory. St. Olaf (6-4, 4-3 MIAC) got straight-set singles victories from first year Fiona O'Flaherty and senior Teresa Fawcett and a doubles win from first years Sarah Clark and Jane Spading in the loss.

In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Rankings, St. Kate's was ranked No. 15 and St. Olaf was ranked No. 20.

The pairs of Kelsey Dorr and Sofia Walker and Bri Dorr and Monica Zink gave the Wildcats two points in doubles with 8-5 wins at the top-two spots, while Clark and Spading provided the Oles with a point via an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. The win improved Clark and Spading's record to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play this season.

St. Kate's earned straight-set victories from Zink and both Dorrs to get to five points with three singles matches still on court. First year Olha Zubarieva extended the first set of her match against K. Dorr – who is ranked No. 10 in the region – to a tiebreaker before going down by a 7-6, 6-3 score.

O'Flaherty tied Zubarieva for the team lead in singles victories this season with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Fawcett followed with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles to even her conference record at 3-3. The final match on court came at No. 2 singles where senior Christiana Cholakis came back from dropping the first set, 6-0, to extend the match to a super tiebreaker before being edged, 14-12, in the decider.

St. Olaf is currently tied for fifth in the MIAC standings with Saint Ben's with three conference matches remaining. The Oles head to Moorhead to face Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, April 23 at noon.
