Three homer in baseball's game-two win over Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team got home runs from three different hitters in a 10-4 win in game two after a 14-2 loss to Concordia-Moorhead in game one on Saturday at Mark Almli Field.

In game one, Concordia (10-8, 5-4 MIAC) scored five first-inning runs and never looked back, as all nine starters had at least one hit in the win. St. Olaf (11-12, 5-6 MIAC) responded in game two, getting home runs from sophomores Sam Lavin and Joey Glampe, in addition to the first collegiate home run by first year Justin Isaacson, on its way to earning a split.

The Oles hit the road on Monday, April 25 for a twin bill against Hamline at CHS Field in St. Paul. First pitch in game one is at 2:30 p.m.

Carter Mulcahy paced the Cobbers' 17-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, as the visitors had a pair of five-run innings in the game-one win. Six Concordia hitters had multiple hits in the game and Jacoby Nold held St. Olaf to one run over five innings to pick up the victory.

Concordia scored five runs on five hits in the first half inning, as seven-of-eight hitters reached base after fifth-year senior Hunter Barber opened the game with a strikeout. St. Olaf got on the board in the bottom of the second behind three-straight hits. Fifth-year senior Matthew Muller and first year Matthew Kulesa had back-to-back singles with one out before junior Avery von Herrmann brought Muller in with a double down the left-field line.

The Cobbers scored the next eight runs over the middle innings to take a 14-1 lead. Isaacson drove in the Oles' second run with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh after sophomore Sean Goldman singled and stole second.

Five pitchers worked in the game for St. Olaf, including sophomore Owen Manning who threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning with one strikeout.

In game two, it was St. Olaf's turn to jump out to a first-inning lead, as the Oles scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a 5-0 lead after four innings. Concordia cut its deficit to one with a four-run fifth, but St. Olaf scored the final five runs of the game while pulling away with a four-run seventh.

Five hitters had multiple hits for the Oles, including Lavin, Glampe, and Isaacson who all homered in the win. Lavin hit a two-run home run in the first inning before Glampe and Isaacson led off the sixth and seventh innings with solo home runs.

Senior Jonah Smithson earned the first victory of his collegiate career by throwing 2.1 innings of relief while allowing just one run. Sophomore Will Wamre and first year Jacob Fickenscher combined to keep the Cobbers scoreless for the final 2.1 innings. Lavin made the start, striking out six hitters in 2.2 scoreless frames.

After sophomore Brian Nevin reached on an error to start the bottom of the first, Lavin hit the first pitch over the right-field fence to give St. Olaf a quick 2-0 lead. Senior Andrew Nomoto followed with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Muller two batters later.

The Oles added single runs to their lead in the third and fourth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Nomoto and a fielder's choice groundout by junior Harald Borg. Trailing 5-0, the Cobbers responded with four runs in the fifth, including three on a home run by Mulcahy.

Isaacson started the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left to push St. Olaf's lead to 6-4, but the Oles left the bases loaded to keep it a two-run game. The Cobbers threatened to cut into the Oles' lead in the seventh, but Wamre got the final out to leave the bases loaded.

St. Olaf broke the game open with four runs in the next half inning for the final runs of the game. Glampe clobbered a leadoff home run – his team-leading sixth of the season – to begin the inning and Isaacson tripled two batters later before scoring on a single by Borg. Later in the inning, Lavin lined a two-out, two-run single up the middle to finish off the scoring.
