Hammonds and Hansen help baseball to one-run win over Carleton in halted game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Evan Hammonds delivered the game-winning single in the 11th inning to give the St. Olaf College baseball team a 4-3 victory over crosstown-rival Carleton College in the resumption of a suspended game on Tuesday afternoon at Mel Taube Field.

With one out and runners on first and second in the 11th, Hammonds singled to left to bring in fifth-year senior Matthew Muller to break a 3-3 tie and give St. Olaf (12-12, 6-6 MIAC) the lead. Sophomore Derek Hansen took care of the rest, retiring six of the seven Carleton (7-15, 4-6 MIAC) batters he faced over the two innings played on Tuesday.

Tuesday's action was the resumption of a suspended game from the doubleheader between the two teams on Tuesday, April 19. After the Knights took the opener, 1-0, the two teams were locked at 3-3 after nine innings when the umpires suspended play due to darkness.

Last Tuesday, first year Jacob Fickenscher and AJ Staff were locked in a pitchers' duel over the first four-and-a-half innings of play before Carleton broke through with two runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead. St. Olaf answered with a run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to get on the board and climb within a run.

After Staff exited the game having allowed just one unearned run over seven innings, the Oles scored two runs off of reliever Ben Jeweler in the eighth inning to claim a 3-2 lead. A walk and a pair of throwing errors by the Knights put runners on second and third with nobody out for sophomore Sam Lavin, who singled through the left side to score both runners. St. Olaf threatened for more runs in the inning but left the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the ninth, it was Carleton's turn to benefit from an error to score a run to send the game to extra innings before play was halted, scoring on a two-out RBI single by James Sassi, who had three hits in the game. After play resumed a week later, both teams were retired in order in the 10th before the Oles got the deciding run in the 11th.

Muller drew a walk to start the inning before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by first year Matthew Kulesa. Pinch-hitter Justin Isaacson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base for Hammonds, who plated Muller with the go-ahead single.

Hansen allowed a one-out single in the 11th but got a fielder's choice and a swinging strikeout to end the game. The sophomore collected his second victory of the season, allowing just one unearned run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts over five innings over the two days of play. Fickenscher struck on a career-high nine batters over his six innings of two-run ball.

The Knights out-hit the Oles by an 11-4 margin in the game, thanks to Sassi's three hits and four hits from Asher Stolberg.

St. Olaf heads to St. Paul to take on Hamline on Wednesday, April 27 at CHS Field. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m.
