Women's basketball stymies St. Scholastica for fourth win in six

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team registered its fourth win in its last six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contests by downing the College of St. Scholastica, 61-40, on Monday evening at Skoglund Center.

Coming off a 74-45 victory at Augsburg University on Saturday, St. Olaf (7-7, 4-7 MIAC) made it back-to-back MIAC wins for the first time this season by holding St. Scholastica (0-13, 0-11 MIAC) to 20.7 percent (12-for-58) shooting from the field on the night. The Saints made no more than three field goals in each quarter and were just 5-for-29 (17.2 percent) from three-point range in the game.

Senior Rachel Kelly recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. The Northfield native moved up one spot to No. 17 in program history with 864 points for her career, while also assuming sole possession of eighth place in program history with 353 made field goals.

After matching her career high with 17 points on Saturday, sophomore Sarah Tangen was in double figures again with 10 points, including making a pair of three-pointers. Senior Grace Hegland also knocked down two three-pointers while registering 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Sophia Kormann had her most productive game of the season with seven points and six rebounds.

St. Olaf never trailed in the game and led for 38:57 out of the 40 minutes. The Oles held a 28-12 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded the visitors by a 53-32 margin.

Tangen scored five points off the bench in the opening quarter, including a three-pointer that capped a 9-2 start for St. Olaf over the first 4:35 of the game. Broberg scored seven of St. Scholastica's 11 points in the quarter, including a buzzer-beating banked in three-pointer that cut the Oles' lead to 14-11 after one.

St. Olaf extended its lead to 32-20 at halftime after doubling up St. Scholastica in the second quarter, outscoring the Saints by an 18-9 margin. With the Oles up by five, Kelly went on a personal 6-0 run to give St. Olaf its first double-digit-point advantage of the game at 29-18 with 2:19 to go until halftime. Kelly capped a 10-point second quarter with a layup in the final minute that sent the Oles into the break up 32-20.

In the third, St. Olaf started the quarter by limiting St. Scholastica to one point over the first six-plus minutes to stretch its lead to 41-21 midway through. The Saints trimmed their deficit to 43-29 with 1:45 remaining but that was as close as the visitors would get the rest of the way, as the Oles led by as many as 27 in the final quarter.

Next up for St. Olaf is a road matchup against Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in St. Peter. The Gusties took the first meeting of the season by a 71-61 score at Skoglund Center on Dec. 7.
