NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the College of St. Scholastica and extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 5-0 victory in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
First year
Solvei Berg-Messerole scored two goals and was one of four skaters with multi-point games for St. Olaf (10-5-2, 6-3-1 MIAC), which reached double figures in wins for the first time since 2012-13 with the victory. First year
Hannah Fritz recorded her third collegiate shutout, keeping out all 23 shots St. Scholastica (4-10-1, 3-7-0 MIAC) mustered in the game.
St. Olaf's six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) is its longest since winning seven-straight games from Feb. 5-26, 2011. The five-goal margin marked the Oles' largest margin of victory in a home game since a 6-1 triumph over Hamline Unviersity on Jan. 18, 2014.
In addition to Berg-Messerole's fourth multi-goal game of the season, fifth-year senior
Annika Patterson, sophomore
Sophie McBane, and first year
Molly Terebayza all registered goals in the win for the Oles. Sophomore
Hannah Metric handed out a career-high three assists, while junior
Lexie Ligday and sophomore
Grace Lankas had two apiece.
Berg-Messerole opened the scoring early at 4:58 of the first period, flipping in a backhand from in close after being set up by Lankas and Metric. St. Olaf doubled its lead 10 minutes later on Terebayza's team-leading 11th goal of the season, as the first year poked in a rebound in front after being found by Metric. The Oles scored on two of their four shots on goal in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead after one.
St. Olaf added two more goals in the second period to extend its lead to 4-0 after 40 minutes. Berg-Messerole netted her second goal of the game on the power play at the 9:03 mark before McBane added her fourth of the year at 15:30 by jamming in a rebound off a Lankas shot from the right point.
Patterson added the lone goal of the final period for St. Olaf, scoring for the second-straight game. Ligday started the move that led to Patterson's goal, flipping the puck to sophomore
Kate Carfagnini in the Oles' defensive zone leading to a 3-on-2 rush. Carfagnini got to center ice, found Patterson at the blue line, and Patterson fired the puck in under the bar to cap the scoring.
St. Olaf outshot St. Scholastica by a 33-23 margin in the game. Fritz collected her seventh victory of the season with the shutout, while Kenzie Cole took the loss despite a 28-save performance for the Saints.
The Oles host Concordia-Moorhead for both games of next weekend's series, starting with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Jan. 27.
