BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – First year goaltender
Hannah Fritz of the St. Olaf College women's hockey team was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week on Monday afternoon.
Fritz became the second student-athlete in the conference to earn one of the two weekly awards for the second time after stopping 47 of the 49 shots she faced in St. Olaf's sweep of the College of St. Scholastica over the weekend. Katie McCoy of Gustavus Adolphus College is the only other two-time honoree in the conference this season and, like Fritz, was recognized as the defensive honoree in back-to-back weeks.
Over the weekend, Fritz went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .959 save percentage to help the Oles extend their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1), which is the program's longest stretch without a loss since February 2011. The first year made 24 saves, including sliding across the goal line to stop a quality scoring chance with 1:30 left in a one-goal game, in Friday night's 4-2 road win. She followed that up with a 23-save shutout in a 5-0 victory on Saturday for her third collegiate shutout.
Fritz and the Oles are in action at home for both games of this weekend's series against Concordia-Moorhead, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop on Friday, Jan. 27 for the team's Mental Health Awareness Game.
