NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to a program-record eight games and recorded its third-straight shutout by blanking Concordia-Moorhead, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, St. Olaf (12-5-2, 8-3-1 MIAC) scored three goals in the second period and two more in the third to complete the weekend sweep of Concordia-Moorhead (5-14-0, 2-10-0 MIAC). Before this weekend, the Oles had not swept the Cobbers since 2010-11. The sweep earned St. Olaf possession of the Troll Trophy for the first time after the teams first played for the prize last season.
With the win, St. Olaf extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1), surpassing the previous longest run of seven-straight wins from Feb. 5-26, 2011. The Oles have also won their last five games, which is the program's longest winning streak since the same time period. St. Olaf's eight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) wins are its most since 2011-12 and its 12 overall victories are its most since 2010-11 (12-12-2).
The Oles outshot the Cobbers by a 20-2 margin in shots on goal in the opening period thanks, in part, to three opportunities on the power play, but Kiana Flaig stopped all 20 of St. Olaf's shots to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
It did not take the Oles long to break the deadlock in the second period, however, as fifth-year senior
Annika Patterson weaved through the Cobbers' defense following a neutral-zone face-off and scored just 1:21 into the period. The goal was Patterson's fourth of the season and her third in the last four games.
St. Olaf stretched its lead to 3-0 after two periods with two goals in the space of 2:12 later in the period. Senior
Maddie Anderson netted her third goal of the season at the 12:20 mark, flipping the puck home from the right post off the team-leading 14th assist of the season by sophomore
Grace Lankas.
A little over two minutes after Anderson's goal, first year
Solvei Berg-Messerole made it 3-0 with her first of two goals in the game. After collecting the puck from senior
Makenzie Booth in the center circle, Berg-Messerole circled into the offensive zone on the left and snuck in a shot at the near post to get into double figures on the season in goals.
Berg-Messerole equaled classmate
Molly Terebayza for the team lead with 11 goals just 1:40 into the third period, firing the puck home in front after Terebayza found her linemate from behind the net. St. Olaf killed off over a minute of 5-on-3 power-play time for Concordia later in the period before tacking on a fifth goal midway through the period. First year
MaKenna Beaver got the first goal of her collegiate career at 10:20, slinging the puck in off the post off sophomore
Mandy Moran's first assist of the season.
First year
Hannah Fritz collected her third-straight shutout by stopping all 24 shots she faced for the Oles, including making 11 saves in each of the final two periods. Fritz has allowed just three goals during her five-game winning streak. Flaig was less busy after the first period but still finished with 32 saves for the Cobbers.
With the sweep, St. Olaf sits in third place in the MIAC standings with 25 points with three weekends left in the regular season. The Oles begin their series with St. Catherine University on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
