MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 1-1 road tie against Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
St. Olaf (6-5-5, 4-3-4 MIAC) entered the game needing at least a tie to have a shot at a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs and got the tie thanks to a late goal by junior
Faith Yi. The tie meant the Oles needed Macalester College to defeat Augsburg University later in the day, but the Scots and Auggies also played to a 1-1 tie to end St. Olaf's playoff aspirations.
On the flip side, the Cobbers knew a tie would be enough for them to lock up a playoff berth and the hosts got out to an early lead on a fourth-minute goal by Grace Mork. The goal was one of just two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes for Concordia. St. Olaf nearly responded quickly through Yi, but a Cobber defender prevented Yi's goal-bound shot in the 10th minute.
Concordia protected the 1-0 lead until Yi netted the second goal of her collegiate career in the 85th minute to give the Oles hope of a late comeback victory. First year
Roxanne Rundle started the move that culminated in the goal, sending a ball into the box from the left end line that first year
Emily Johnson re-directed onto the crossbar at the near post, but Yi reacted quickest to head the ball in and tie the game.
St. Olaf generated one last chance to grab a potential game-winning goal, but Bre Nelson made her sixth save of the game on a shot by Rundle in the 89th minute. Senior
Maddie Black faced just two shots over the course of the 90 minutes, as the Oles held a 15-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
