Tangen, Smith lead women's basketball to first win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior Sarah Tangen and first year Chloee Smith combined for 36 points to lead the St. Olaf College women's basketball team to a 64-45 win over Crown College for its first win of the season on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.

Tangen scored a career-high 20 points and Smith added 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench for St. Olaf (1-2), which remained unbeaten at 5-0 in the all-time series with Crown (0-3) with the victory. The win was also the first for the Oles under interim head coach Jasmine Borgmann.

Tangen was 5-for-13 from the field and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line on her way to 20 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Smith went 7-for-10 from the field on her 16-point, nine-rebound evening while also adding two blocks. St. Olaf doubled up Crown by a 52-26 margin on the boards in the win, including pulling down 18 offensive rebounds that led to a 20-1 advantage in second-chance points.

First year Joy Brandenstein was also in double figures for the Oles with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting and collected six rebounds. Junior Paige Yagodinski contributed five points, seven rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one blocked shot.

Crown hit its first three field goals, including two from three-point range, on its way to an 8-4 lead three minutes in. The Polars were 4-for-10 from behind the arc in the opening quarter and their fourth make gave the visitors a 15-12 lead with 2:13 remaining before Smith scored the final five points of the quarter to put the Oles on top 17-15 after one.

St. Olaf held Crown to six second-quarter points to open up a 33-21 lead at the half. Trailing 21-19 after back-to-back three-pointers by the Polars, the Oles held Crown scoreless for the final 7:36 of the quarter as part of a 14-0 run that gave St. Olaf the 12-point lead. Yagodinski scored five-straight points late in the quarter.

In the third, St. Olaf opened up its largest lead of the game at 49-27 on a jumper by Smith with 1:11 remaining in the third and led by double figures the rest of the way. Tangen scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half for the Oles, doing most of her damage at the free-throw line after not making it to the charity stripe before the break.

St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a trip to St. Peter to face Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
