ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team matched its best-ever start to a season by downing Northland College by a 3-1 score to move to 4-0-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bay Area Civic Center.
For the second day in a row, sophomores
Solvei Berg-Messerole and
Molly Terebayza combined to score three goals for St. Olaf (4-0-0), as Berg-Messerole scored twice and Terebayza added a goal. The win completed a sweep of Northland (0-3-1) and kept the Oles unbeaten in the all-time series with the LumberJills at 5-0-1. The 4-0-0 start marks the second time St. Olaf has won its first four games of the season, as the Oles swept UW-Stevens Point and Trine University to open the 2021-22 campaign.
With the game still scoreless, Berg-Messerole broke the deadlock for St. Olaf at the 11:26 mark of the second period, scoring off an assist from Huselid, who picked up three assists in the win. Northland answered on the power play four minutes later to tie the game at the second intermission.
Just 45 seconds into the third period, Berg-Messerole tallied her second goal of the game for the eventual game-winning goal, with Huselid and junior
Grace Lankas picking up assists. The two-goal game marked the third-straight multi-point game for Berg-Messerole, who has three goals and five assists in that span. Huselid completed her three-assist afternoon with an assist on Terebayza's insurance goal at the 11:42 mark of the third.
St. Olaf totaled 50 shots on goal in the win for the team's highest single-game total since having 50 in a 2-2 tie against Northland one day shy of a year ago to the day. The Oles held the LumberJills to 19 shots on goal as well, as sophomore
Carley Tuman stopped 18 of the 19 to earn the second victory of her career in her first start of the season. Corrin Hanson had at least 15 saves in each period and 47 for the game for the hosts.
St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at Bethel University on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Royals at 3 p.m. the next day.
