MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team dropped its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series opener to Augsburg University by a 3-1 margin on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg (4-4-0, 3-2-0 MIAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period and held on the rest of the way despite first year
Julia Larson making it a one-goal game before the midway point of the third period for St. Olaf (4-6-0, 0-5-0 MIAC). The Auggies reclaimed a two-goal lead just 1:11 later.
In the opening period, Augsburg got on the board first less than three minutes in on a goal by Sydney Rydel and stretched its lead to 2-0 with 5:01 to go in the period through Emily Cronkhite. The score remained 2-0 until Larson scored on a 2-on-1 rush with junior
Kate Carfagnini at the 8:45 mark of the third period to make it a one-goal game.
The Auggies got the goal back just 1:11 later, however, on an unassisted goal by Nora Stepan and held the Oles in check the rest of the way. Augsburg owned a 43-18 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Chloe Stockinger recorded 17 saves to pick up the win for the hosts, while sophomore
Carley Tuman had 40 saves – the second-highest total of her career – for the Oles.
Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play in the game, including St. Olaf failing to capitalize on a five-minute power play late in the second and early in the third. The two teams conclude their season on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
