Lundin enshrined in USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame

DENVER, Colo. – Former St. Olaf College head men's cross country and track and field coach Phil Lundin was inducted into the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Hall of Fame on Tuesday evening.

Lundin, who spent a combined 34 seasons at St. Olaf from 2008-20 after previously working at the University of Minnesota, was one of six decorated coaches in the Class of 2023 to be enshrined at the USTFCCCA Convention. He was joined in the class by John Homon (Mount Union), Wes Kittley (Abilene Christian, Texas Tech), Donna Ricks (Northwest Missouri State, Minnesota State, Carleton), Martin Smith (Wisconsin, Oregon, Iowa State, Virginia, Oklahoma), and Victor Thomas (Lincoln (Mo.)).

Tuesday evening's induction made Lundin the second St. Olaf head coach to join the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame, joining longtime head women's cross country and track and field head coach Chris Daymont, who was part of the Class of 2014. Daymont was the only previous Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) coach in the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame prior to Lundin and Ricks' induction.

During his time at St. Olaf, Lundin coached 184 MIAC all-conference selections, 52 individual or relay conference champions, 49 national qualifiers, 40 individual or relay All-Americans, 10 national-qualifying teams, seven individual national champions, and six conference-championship teams. His career was highlighted by leading the men's cross country program to the 2013 national title, the first NCAA team championship in school history. An eight-time MIAC Coach of the Year, Lundin's cross country teams won five-straight MIAC titles from 2012-16 and recorded three-straight top-five national finishes from 2013, placing second in 2014 and fourth in 2015 in addition to the 2013 national title.

In addition to his eight MIAC Coach of the Year accolades, Lundin was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2013 and the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Central Region Coach of the Year four-straight years from 2012-15. His teams also excelled academically, earning a combined 32-of-33 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team awards and producing 72 USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees.

Lundin was previously inducted into the St. Olaf College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022 and the Augsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
