Tangen scores career-high 22 in road loss to Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior Sarah Tangen scored a career-high 22 points for the St. Olaf College women's basketball team in a 77-69 road loss to Augsburg University on Saturday at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg (2-5, 1-4 MIAC) held just a one-point lead over St. Olaf (2-6, 1-4 MIAC) at halftime before exploding for 27 third-quarter points to build a double-digit-point lead. After shooting just 38.7 percent (12-for-31) in the opening half, the Auggies were 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the field in the third quarter and 16-for-27 (59.3 percent) overall in the second half.

Tangen scored 17 of her game- and career-high 22 points in the opening half, as the junior was responsible for 17 of the Oles' 27 first-half points. First year Chloe Smith narrowly missed out on her third double-double in the last four games with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench, as Smith was 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Junior Paige Yagodinski recorded the third double-double of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end. Junior Sophia Kormann was in double figures in scoring for the fourth time in five games with 12 points and seven rebounds. St. Olaf held a 46-32 advantage on the glass in the game and turned 16 offensive rebounds into a 15-2 edge in second-chance points.

Anja Smith led Augsburg with 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Katie Manecke was 8-for-12 at the free-throw line on her way to a 15-point, six-assist afternoon, while Kalena Myers contributed 12 points and five assists.

Tangen scored all 11 of St. Olaf's first-quarter points, as the Oles trailed by just one early. A three-pointer by Tangen with 6:44 to go in the quarter gave St. Olaf its only lead of the game at 5-4. Early in the second quarter, the Auggies held the Oles scoreless for a stretch of nearly four minutes during an 8-0 run that gave the hosts a 22-13 lead. Yagodinski scored St. Olaf's final five points of the half to make it just a 28-27 game at halftime.

Augsburg hit its first three three-pointers of the third quarter as part of a 5-for-6 start to the quarter to open up a 41-31 lead and led by at least seven points the rest of the way. Smith and Kormann combined to score 17 of St. Olaf's 25 points in the fourth quarter, but Manecke's 7-for-10 quarter at the charity stripe helped the Auggies maintain a comfortable cushion.

The Oles head to Macalester College for their final game of 2023 on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The game is a non-conference contest that replaces one of St. Olaf's two canceled games against Carleton College.
