SUPERIOR, Wis. – First year
Julia Larson scored a third-period hat trick, including the game-winner with 3:00 remaining, as the St. Olaf College women's hockey team rallied from a 3-1 deficit for a 4-3 win to complete a sweep of UW-Superior on Saturday at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
After sophomore
MaKenna Beaver gave St. Olaf (6-7-0) an early lead, UW-Superior (4-5-1) scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. Larson helped the Oles overcome the deficit in the third, however, scoring a natural hat trick that included a pair of power-play goals to give St. Olaf its third non-conference sweep of the season.
For the second day in a row, St. Olaf lit the lamp three times on the power play, going 3-for-10 a day after going 3-for-9. UW-Superior was assessed 10 penalties for the second time on the weekend, including a five-minute boarding major at 13:34 of the third.
After picking up a career-high three assists in a 5-0 home win on Friday, sophomore Makenna Beaver opened the scoring for the Oles with her second goal of the year, scoring on a deflected effort on the power play just 2:31 in. The Yellowjackets responded midway through the period on a goal by Cora Coz on a 2-on-1 rush to tie the game at 1-1 after one.
UW-Superior went ahead just 1:06 into the second period through Emma Booth's unassisted goal and doubled its lead at 11:09 of the middle period on another unassisted goal by Kaylin Garner. Larson took over in the third period, however, netting a power-play goal at 2:28 and an even-strength goal at 13:13, with sophomore
Solvei Berg-Messerole picking up assists on both goals.
Larson capped off her natural hat trick with a 5-on-3 goal with exactly 3:00 remaining, as the hat trick doubled the first year's season goal total to six. St. Olaf owned a sizable 38-21 advantage in shots on goal in the game, thanks largely to firing 15 shots on the 10 power-play opportunities.
Sophomore
Hannah Fritz picked up the victory after stopping all seven shots she faced over the final 28:51 after entering the game after UW-Superior's third goal. Sophomore
Carley Tuman had 11 saves over the first 31:09. Rose Beeman registered 34 saves in the loss for the Yellowjackets.
St. Olaf is off until returning to conference play with a series against Saint Mary's University on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13. Puck drop for the opener is at 6 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
