Anderson tallies goal, women's hockey drops regular-season finale to No. 2 Gustavus

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Hailey Holland scored the first three goals of the game to lead second-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College to a 6-1 victory over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Holland scored the lone goal of the first period and added two more in the second period to help Gustavus (22-3-0, 17-1-0 MIAC) build a 5-0 lead before senior Maddie Anderson got St. Olaf (14-9-2, 10-7-1 MIAC) on the board inside the final seven minutes of the game. Both teams had already secured spots in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs entering the game.

With the loss and results elsewhere in the conference, the Oles will be the No. 4 seed in the MIAC Playoffs and will host No. 5 seed Hamline University in quarterfinal/play-in game on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The College of Saint Benedict secured the No. 3 seed with a 3-1 victory over St. Catherine University, which was eliminated with the loss, opening the door for Hamline to get into the tournament with their 4-1 win over Bethel University.

Holland scored unassisted at the 15:12 mark for the lone goal of the opening period before adding goals just over 10 minutes apart in the second to stretch the Gusties' lead to 3-0. Gustavus got goals from Brooke Power and Kristina Press 2:02 apart early in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Anderson scored St. Olaf's first goal in the last six meetings in the series – and its fourth in the last 13 – with 6:29 remaining, tossing the puck in from a sharp angle on the left off an assist from sophomore Sophie McBane. The goal was Anderson's fourth of the season and came in her 100th-career game, while McBane earned her fifth assist.

First year Hannah Fritz stopped 22 of the 25 shots she faced over the first two periods before giving way to first year Carley Tuman and sophomore Devon Cole for the third period. Tuman recorded six saves in over 16 minutes of action before Cole took over for the final three-plus minutes. Katie McCoy earned the win by stopping 12-of-13 shots in 56:41 between the pipes for Gustavus before Meghan Gibb had one save over the final 3:13.
