NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year
Molly Terebayza scored 40 seconds into overtime to give the St. Olaf College women's hockey team a 3-2 victory over St. Catherine University and a split of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
After St. Kate's (11-8-2, 5-7-2 MIAC) scored 25 seconds into overtime for a 3-2 win in the series opener on Friday night, St. Olaf (12-6-2, 9-4-1 MIAC) flipped the script with an early goal of its own in overtime courtesy of Terebayza. The victory kept the Oles in third place in the MIAC standings with 28 points with two weekends remaining, as St. Olaf sits just one point behind Augsburg University.
St. Olaf's 13 victories this season are its most since going 14-11-2 in the 2009-10 campaign, while its nine conference wins are its most since going 9-7-2 in 2011-12.
Paige Loidolt scored the lone goal of the opening period for St. Kate's midway through the period and held the lead until first year
Solvei Berg-Messerole tied the game at the 6:53 mark of the second period. The first year collected the puck at center ice, skated into the offensive zone on the left, and fired a wrist shot across goal into the top-right corner for her 12th goal of the season.
St. Olaf grabbed its first lead of the weekend with 8:03 remaining in regulation on sophomore
Sophie McBane's second goal of the series, as McBane banged home the rebound after a shot by sophomore
Grace Lankas. Lankas' assist was her 16th of the season, which is the most by an Ole since 2011-12 and is tied for ninth in single-season program history.
The Oles' lead lasted just under five minutes, however, as Marie Reimer tied the game for the Wildcats on the power play at 16:51 to eventually send the game to overtime. After scoring just 25 seconds into the extra session the night before, Laura Denchfield nearly scored even quicker, but junior
Lexie Ligday blocked Denchfield's wraparound attempt just eight seconds into overtime to keep the Oles alive.
Just over 30 seconds later, St. Olaf went the other way and won the game through Terebayza, as Ligday gained possession of the puck behind her own goal and passed the puck to Terebayza at her own blue line. With a St. Kate's defender ahead of her, Terebayza weaved to the right and fired a wrist shot across goal from the middle of the right circle to match Berg-Messerole with her 12th goal of the season.
