WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – First year
Frank Lavin hit his first-career home run, but No. 25-ranked Augustana College (Ill.) scored the final 10 runs of the game to defeat the St. Olaf College baseball team 16-6 in seven innings on Tuesday at Chain of Lakes Complex.
After Augustana (15-3) led 5-2 early, St. Olaf (3-7) clawed its way back to tie the game at 6-6 in the fourth inning, but the Vikings scored four runs in the fifth, four in the sixth, and two in the seventh to record the run-rule victory. Augustana broke into the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll released earlier in the day on Tuesday.
In addition to Lavin's two-run home run, sophomore
Evan Hammonds, first year
Breckin Hadley, and junior
Joey Glampe all had multi-hit games for the Oles. Hammonds extended his hitting streak to four games by going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and one RBI, while Hadley was 2-for-4 with a run and Glampe was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.
St. Olaf jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on a two-out RBI single by Glampe and a two-out bases-loaded walk to sophomore
Matthew Kulesa. Augustana responded in the bottom of the first by scoring five runs before the second out of the inning.
The Oles got back within a run in the second on Lavin's two-run blast, which came with two outs after Hammonds singled earlier in the inning. After the Vikings pushed their lead to 6-4 in the third, St. Olaf got single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game, as sophomore
Jack Alley drove in a run with a ground out in the fourth and Hammonds singled in first year
Mason Buck, who doubled in the prior at bat, in the fifth.
The first five Augustana batters of the home half of the fifth all reached base, as the Vikings scored four times to take the lead for good. Augustana added four more runs in the sixth and scored twice in the seventh to end the game early. Five Viking batters had multi-hit games in the win.
The two teams complete their three-game series on Wednesday, March 29 at 8 a.m. CDT at Chain of Lakes Field 1.
