Women's tennis inches closer to playoff spot with win over Cobbers

OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team inched closer to securing a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with a 7-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

St. Olaf (7-6, 5-3 MIAC) registered its 23rd consecutive victory in the series against Concordia (9-11, 2-8 MIAC) dating back to 2003 by winning two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. With the win, the Oles need to win one of their remaining two matches or have St. Catherine University lose one of its final three matches to book its 14th postseason appearance in 16 seasons.

Sophomore Olha Zubarieva, senior Allie Prokosch, and sophomore Fiona O'Flaherty were all victorious in both singles and doubles for St. Olaf.

The regionally-ranked duo of Zubarieva and Prokosch bounced back from seeing their 10-match winning streak come to an end with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while O'Flaherty and classmate Gabby Trapero picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles in just their second match as a pairing. The victories gave St. Olaf a 2-1 edge heading into singles, as Zubarieva and Prokosch moved to 7-1 in MIAC play this season.

Zubarieva, who was ranked in this week's initial set of NCAA Division III Regional Rankings in singles, improved to a team-best 6-2 in conference play with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Jane Spading recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles, while O'Flaherty earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Zubarieva, Spading, and O'Flaherty are tied for the team lead with 10 singles victories this season.

Prokosch and first year Alexandra Berns also collected straight-set singles victories, as Prokosch lost just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Berns dropped just four games in a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles. Berns remained undefeated (8-0, 4-0 MIAC) this season with the win, while Prokosch also claimed her eighth victory of the year.

St. Olaf travels to Macalester College on Tuesday, April 18 for a 5:30 p.m. start.
