OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season and celebrated
Allie Prokosch's Senior Day with a 7-2 victory over St. Catherine University on Saturday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
St. Olaf (8-7, 6-4 MIAC), which entered the match already having locked up a spot in next week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs, closed out the regular season by picking up two doubles victories and five singles wins to top St. Kate's (5-10, 3-7 MIAC) for the first time since 2019. The match was the final "home" match for 34th-year head coach
Scott Nesbit, who is retiring from coaching at the conclusion of this season.
Prokosch and sophomores
Olha Zubarieva and
Fiona O'Flaherty were all victorious in both singles and doubles for the Oles, with Zubarieva earning a victory at No. 1 singles in a matchup of regionally-ranked players and teaming with Prokosch for a win over a regionally-ranked pair at No. 1 doubles.
Prokosch and Zubarieva improved to 13-1 in their last 14 matches with an 8-3 victory over Kelsey Dorr and Sofia Walker at No. 1 doubles. Dorr and Walker entered the match ranked No. 15 in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and No. 2 in Region VII in the NCAA Regional Rankings, while Prokosch and Zubarieva were No. 5 Region VII this week.
O'Flaherty and classmate
Sarah Clark gave the Oles a 2-0 lead by registering an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles to move to 3-0 as a pair this season. St. Kate's claimed an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles to cut St. Olaf's lead to just 2-1 heading into singles.
In singles, the Oles earned victories at the top-five spots and four of the five came in straight sets. In the lone match of the day to go to a super tiebreaker, Zubarieva fought back from losing the first set to secure a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Dorr, who was ranked one spot ahead of Zubarieva in both sets of regional rankings. Dorr was ranked No. 20 in the region by the ITA poll and No. 4 in the NCAA rankings, while Zubarieva was No. 20 and No. 5, respectively.
Prokosch and first year
Alexandra Berns both recovered from early deficits in their opening sets to record straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Prokosch was victorious by a 7-5, 6-3 margin at No. 2 singles for her 10th victory of the season, while Berns grabbed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to improve to 9-1 in singles this year.
O'Flaherty picked up her team-leading 12th singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles, while Spading did not lose a game at No. 4 singles to grab her 11th win of the season.
The Oles await other results in the conference to find out who their opponent will be in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Wednesday, April 26. St. Olaf will either be the No. 5 or No. 6 seed and will play away from home.
