Women's tennis falls to top-seeded Carleton in Nesbit's final match

OWATONNA, Minn. – The fifth-seeded St. Olaf College women's tennis team concluded its season with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded and unbeaten Carleton College in the semifinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Friday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

Carleton (19-0) continued its undefeated season by sweeping the three doubles matches, two of which were decided by two games or fewer, before claiming straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to top St. Olaf (9-8). The Oles were appearing in the semifinals for the ninth time since 2007 and the second time in the last three seasons.

The loss marked St. Olaf's final match under longtime head coach Scott Nesbit, who is retiring from coaching after 34 seasons leading the women's tennis program. During his career, Nesbit led the Ole women to a 348-220 (.613) record in dual matches, including a 219-117 (.652) record in MIAC play. He also spent 30 seasons at the helm of the St. Olaf men's program, guiding the team to a 260-219 (.543) mark that included a 158-111 (.587) mark in conference matches.

In doubles, Carleton eased to an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles before St. Olaf pushed the Knights in the other two matches. In a matchup of regionally-ranked pairings, Amelia Asfaw and Mary Hose edge sophomore Olha Zubarieva and senior Allie Prokosch by an 8-6 margin. Sophomores Sarah Clark and Fiona O'Flaherty rallied from a 5-2 deficit at No. 3 doubles to force a tiebreaker but eventually went down by an 8-7 (8-6) margin.

The Knights got a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles from Hose and a 6-4, 6-1 victory from Miriam Shteyman at No. 4 singles to reach the five points necessary to end the match at decision. Carleton will host second-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College, which blanked third-seeded Bethel University by a 5-0 score in Friday's other semifinal, in the championship match on Saturday afternoon.
