Hammonds' walk-off gives baseball Senior Day split with Saints

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team got a walk-off single from sophomore Evan Hammonds to win game two by a 13-12 score after the College of St. Scholastica took the opener, 6-3, on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.

St. Scholastica (6-21, 4-10 MIAC) got a complete-game effort from Jake Schelonka in the opener and held an 8-1 lead in the fifth inning of game two while looking to complete the sweep. St. Olaf (11-14, 6-5 MIAC) had other ideas, however, as the Oles scored 11 of the next 12 runs to take the lead going into the ninth. The Saints used a pair of home runs to tie the game before Hammonds won it for St. Olaf in the bottom of the ninth.

Between the two games, the Oles recognized their senior class of Avery von Herrmann, Harald Borg, and Lucas Warner, along with their families, for the trio's effort and dedication to the program over the last four seasons.

St. Olaf hosts Carleton College on Tuesday, May 2 at 2:30 and 5 p.m. at Mark Almli Field.

St. Scholastica 6, St. Olaf 3 | Box Score

Schelonka earned his first win of the season for the Saints, holding the Oles to three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over the seven-inning complete game. He also went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored to help his own cause at the plate.

Hammonds had three of St. Olaf's seven hits and scored a pair of runs in the loss, falling a home run short of the cycle. First year Breckin Hadley added a double, a run scored, and an RBI as well.

St. Olaf took a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Hammonds reached on an infield single, got to third on an error, and scored on a passed ball. St. Scholastica got the run back in the next half inning with three-straight, two-out hits before going ahead for good on a sacrifice fly in the third.

The visitors stretched their lead to 4-1 in the fifth with two more two-out, run-scoring hits. The Oles got their deficit back to just one in the home half of the fifth with three extra-base hits of their own. Hadley followed a Hammonds double with one of his own to left center and, two batters later, junior Joey Glampe tripled to center to bring the score to 4-3.

Glampe's triple was the last run St. Olaf managed off Schelonka, who pitched around a Hammonds one-out triple in the seventh to finish off the complete game after the Saints gave him insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.

St. Olaf 13, St. Scholastica 12 | Box Score

Looking for its second-straight conference sweep, St. Scholastica jumped out to an 8-1 lead in game two before St. Olaf rallied to take a 12-9 lead by scoring four times in the sixth, five times in the seventh, and twice in the eighth. The Saints responded with three runs in the top of the ninth on a pair of home runs to set the stage for Hammonds' heroics.

In a game that featured 25 runs, 32 hits, and 11 pitchers, four Oles had multi-hit games. Sophomore Matthew Kulesa reached base four times, going 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored, and one RBI, while first year Frank Lavin was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. Junior Sam Lavin had a pair of triples and scored twice, while Hammonds was 2-for-5 with a walk, a double, and two RBI.

With the score tied at 1-1, St. Scholastica scored four runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, and one run in the fifth to open up an 8-1 lead. St. Olaf started its rally in the sixth, scoring four runs on just one hit by taking advantage of four walks, a wild pitch, and a passed ball in the inning. Junior Brian Nevin and Hammonds drew bases-loaded walks in the inning before the final two runs scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Trailing 9-5, the Oles went ahead for the first time since the first inning of game one with a five-run seventh. Frank Lavin drove in two runs with a double to get St. Olaf within a run at 9-8 before a throwing error allowed the Oles to pull even. Kulesa broke the tie with an RBI single, as all five runs scored prior to the first out of the inning.

St. Olaf tacked on two runs to its lead in the bottom of the eighth. For the second inning in a row, Sam Lavin led off with a triple and Glampe drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Frank Lavin drove a solo home run over the fence in right to give the Oles a 12-9 lead heading to the ninth.

In the ninth, St. Scholastica got a two-run home run to the opposite field by Schelonka followed by a solo home run to right by Jack Harris to tie the game at 12-12. Junior Brock Brumley got the final two batters of the inning to ground out back to the mound to give St. Olaf the chance for the walk-off win.

Kulesa started the bottom of the ninth by drawing a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nevin. With the winning run in scoring position, Hammonds swung on the first pitch and lined a single to right to score Kulesa and end the game.
