NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team finished off a 15-12 victory over Augsburg University in game two of a doubleheader originally began back on April 19 on Monday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.
After starting the day with a 15-11 lead through six innings, St. Olaf (15-17, 10-8 MIAC) completed an interrupted sweep of Augsburg (9-24, 6-14 MIAC) by closing out the final three innings on Monday. The game was originally halted due to darkness after the Oles won game one by a 12-3 score at home 19 days prior.
The victory temporarily kept St. Olaf's hopes alive of securing a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs, but those hopes came to an end when Concordia-Moorhead completed a sweep of Bethel University to lock up the fourth and final spot in the tournament. The Oles wrap up their season against the Cobbers in Moorhead on Tuesday, May 9.
Junior
Sam Lavin registered the third four-hit game of his career – all four coming before the game was halted – by going 4-for-6 with a double, a run scored, and four RBI to pace St. Olaf's 15-hit attack. Sophomore
Evan Hammonds reached base four times by going 3-for-5 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI, and four runs scored, while sophomore
Breckin Hadley was 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI.
Junior
Brock Brumley tossed four innings over the duration of the game, including throwing the final three innings on Monday. Brumley struck out four while allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in his fifth victory of the season. Sophomore
Justin Isaacson threw 2.1 scoreless innings prior the suspension.
Already leading 1-0, St. Olaf stretched its lead to 4-0 with a three-run second inning that included a run-scoring double by Hammonds followed by an RBI single by Hadley. Augsburg responded by scoring six runs on eight hits in the top of the third to take a short-lived lead.
The Oles went back ahead in the home half of the third, scoring five runs on just three hits thanks to two walks and a pair of hit batters. Lavin delivered a two-run single in the inning and junior
Joey Glampe followed with a run-scoring single that put St. Olaf back on top.
Augsburg trimmed its deficit to two in the fifth, but St. Olaf got two runs of its own by drawing four walks and getting a sacrifice fly from first year
Brendan Goldman in the bottom of the inning to open up an 11-7 lead. The Auggies tied the game at 11-11 with a four-run top of the sixth, only for the Oles to score four runs on just two hits in the next half inning.
After a pair of walks to start the inning, Hadley drove an RBI double to right to break the tie and, two batters later, Lavin slugged a two-run double to right to add to St. Olaf's lead. Goldman coaxed a bases-loaded walk in the darkness for the final run before the game was suspended.
When the game was resumed, the Auggies got a run on the board quickly in the top of the seventh, but that was the lone run of the day on Monday. Brumley stranded two Augsburg runners in scoring position in the eighth and another in the ninth to finish off the victory.
