Duffy-Shaw's last-minute PK gives women's soccer win at No. 23 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – A last-minute penalty kick by sophomore Cat Duffy-Shaw earned the St. Olaf College women's soccer team a 1-0 road win over No. 23-ranked Wartburg College on Wednesday evening at Salzwedel Field.

With time winding down, St. Olaf (1-2-0) was awarded a penalty kick with 18 seconds remaining and Duffy-Shaw stepped up to convert from the spot for the lone goal of the game. The win over Wartburg (1-2-0) was the Oles' first over a nationally-ranked team since a 1-0 victory over the No. 13-ranked University of St. Thomas on Oct. 20, 2018.

The victory was St. Olaf's first over Wartburg since 2014, snapping the Knights' four-game winning streak in the series, and its third in the last 13 meetings between the two programs. The loss was just the seventh for Wartburg at home since the start of the 2019 season.

In a game of few clear-cut scoring chances, the Oles got the decisive spot kick after a Wartburg defender handled the ball in the box after Duffy-Shaw floated a free kick into the box from the right side. With the chance to win the game, Duffy-Shaw fired the ball home for the first goal of her collegiate career to give St. Olaf its first victory of the season.

Both teams had six shots on goal in the game, although St. Olaf held a 15-12 advantage in shots in the game and had a 54-46 edge in possession. Senior Maddie Black recorded her fifth-career shutout and collected the seventh win of her career with a six-save performance, while Kyra Lenhart kept out all five St. Olaf shots on goal before Duffy-Shaw's penalty kick.

In its final game before Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play begins, St. Olaf hosts Luther College on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
