NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team hung with Concordia-Moorhead until the Cobbers went on a 15-2 third-quarter run to pull away for an 87-67 victory on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf (2-10, 1-7 MIAC) trailed Concordia (8-3, 7-1 MIAC) by just four midway through the third quarter before the Cobbers put together a 15-2 run to open up a 17-point lead with 1:32 to go in the quarter. Concordia, which remains in second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings, led by at least 15 points the rest of the way.
Carlee Sieben scored a game-high 20 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field and made all eight of her free throws while also grabbing six rebounds and handing out three assists for the Cobbers, who shot 47.6 percent (30-for-63) for the game. Concordia had three other double-figure scorers, as Emily Beseman and Makayla Anderson tallied 16 points apiece and Genevieve Gruba added 11 points. The visitors hauled in 16 offensive rebounds in the win and turned them into 21 second-chance points.
Junior
Sarah Tangen was 6-for-12 from the field, 2-for-6 from three-point range, and 5-for-6 at the free-throw line to pace St. Olaf with a 19-point night. First year
Chloee Smith was the only other Ole in double figures, recording 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots in her first collegiate start. Smith was 6-for-7 from the field in her seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season.
Concordia jumped out to a 7-0 lead two minutes in thanks, in part, to four early points from Sieben, but St. Olaf trailed by just two after one quarter at 18-16. Junior
Paige Yagodinski hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening quarter, including one in the closing seconds to make it a two-point game after 10 minutes.
The Cobbers put up 26 second-quarter points to take a 44-36 lead into the locker room after connecting on 4-of-8 three-pointers in the quarter. Two three-pointers from Sieben and one from Maddie Guler quickly pushed Concordia's lead to 29-18 less than three minutes into the quarter, but the Oles whittled their deficit down to just eight at the half as junior
Ziling Zhen scored all eight of her points in the second.
The visitors shot 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from the field in the third quarter but had to wait until the second half of the quarter to add to their lead. Five points from Tangen during a 7-2 run brought St. Olaf within four at 52-48 with 5:49 to go in the third, but Concordia scored 15 of the game's next 17 points to open up a 17-point cushion late in the quarter and led by at least 15 for the remainder of the game. Tangen had 10 of the Oles' 16 third-quarter points.
