WINONA, Minn. – First year
Chloee Smith capped a career-high 24-point performance with the game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining to give the St. Olaf College women's basketball team a 65-63 win over Saint Mary's University on Saturday at Saint Mary's Gym.
With the game tied at 63-63 and two seconds remaining, junior
Sarah Tangen lobbed a front-court inbound pass into Smith, who hit a layup while falling away from the basket from the left block to give St. Olaf (3-13, 2-10 MIAC) a season sweep of Saint Mary's (2-15, 0-12 MIAC). The basket capped a career-high 24-point performance by Smith and capped a late-game rally for the Oles, who trailed 63-54 with 3:55 remaining.
Smith shot 8-for-14 from the field, including going 4-for-5 from three-point range, while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds to lead St. Olaf to its eighth win in the last 10 meetings in the series. Despite battling foul trouble all game, Tangen scored 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting in 19 minutes, while junior
Paige Yagodinski added 12 points and four steals. St. Olaf shot just 37.7 percent (23-for-61) from the field in the game but was 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) in the fourth quarter.
Zoe Fink led Saint Mary's with 17 points off the bench while going 5-for-7 from three-point range in the Cardinals' 15th consecutive loss. Grace Schaffer was the only other double-figure scorer for the hosts with 11 points. Led by Fink's shooting, the Saint Mary's bench outscored the St. Olaf bench by a 35-9 margin.
Smith connected on a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter to help St. Olaf to a 19-16 lead after 10 minutes. The Oles got out to a quick 7-2 lead and never trailed in the quarter, shooting 3-for-6 from three-point range early on. The Cardinals' bench accounted for 10 of Saint Mary's 16 points in the quarter.
St. Olaf shot just 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) in the second quarter but still took a 30-28 lead into the halftime break. A layup by Yagodinski with 7:22 to go in the second gave the Oles the largest lead of the opening half at 25-16, but the Cardinals answered with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the afternoon. Smith capped her 13-point first half with her fourth three-pointer with a little more than a minute remaining to send St. Olaf into the locker room with a two-point edge.
Saint Mary's got its offense going in the third quarter, shooting 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from the field to put 20 points on the board in the quarter and take a 48-43 lead into the fourth. In the fourth, the Cardinals broke open a one-point game with an 11-3 run over the span of 2:15 to open up a 63-54 lead with 3:55 to go. Fink made back-to-back three-pointers in the run, which ended with a three-pointer by Schaffer.
The Schaffer three-pointer marked the final points of the game for Saint Mary's, however, as St. Olaf closed the game on an 11-0 run the rest of the way. After Tangen scored five points in a row to make it a 63-61 game with 1:00 to go, Yagodinski was fouled intentionally after a steal and split four free throws over two trips to the link on the Oles' next possession to tie the game with 32 seconds remaining.
Saint Mary's ran the clock down out of a timeout but missed a jumper that caromed out of bounds with two seconds to go. St. Olaf called a timeout to advance the ball into the front court to set up Smith's game-winner.
The Oles host nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center.
