Berg-Messerole, Fritz lead women's hockey to sweep of Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Sophomore Solvei Berg-Messerole had a hand in all four goals as the St. Olaf College women's hockey team completed a sweep of Concordia-Moorhead with a 4-0 road win on Saturday at Moorhead Sports Center.

Berg-Messerole scored the first hat trick of her collegiate career and added an assist for St. Olaf (8-11-0, 2-10-0 MIAC), which recorded its fifth consecutive victory over Concordia (5-13-1, 1-10-1 MIAC) with the win. The Oles have outscored the Cobbers by a 16-3 margin over the run of five head-to-head victories in a row.

In addition to Berg-Messerole's four-point afternoon, junior Iona Welsch had a season-high three points on a goal and two assists, while first year Molly Terebayza added a pair of assists. Sophomore Hannah Fritz stopped all 26 shots she faced to collect her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career, breaking a tie with Kerry Rollwagen '05 for the most shutouts in program history.

Berg-Messerole got the Oles on the board first just 37 seconds into the opening period by driving to the net from the left and flipping the puck in from a sharp angle. The sophomore added her second goal of the opening period with St. Olaf shorthanded in the final two minutes, throwing the puck into an open net from near the left boards after a mistake by Concordia in its own defensive zone.

St. Olaf maintained its 2-0 lead after the second period before adding two power-play goals in the third period. Berg-Messerole picked up the primary assist on Welsch's power-play tally at 2:40 of the third by sliding the puck into the middle for Welsch to fire home. Berg-Messerole picked up a power-play goal of her own with 1:57 remaining to close out the scoring.

The Oles outshot the Cobbers by a slim 28-26 margin in the game but got three goals from their special-teams in the win. Becca Macklin tallied 24 saves for Concordia in the loss.

St. Olaf hosts St. Catherine University in the MIAC series opener on Friday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.
