Women's hockey pushes No. 2 Gustavus, drops one-goal game in third

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team pushed second-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College until the Gusties broke a 1-1 tie past the midway point of the third period to claim a 2-1 victory on Saturday at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

St. Olaf (2-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) and Gustavus (2-1-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) exchanged goals in the first three minutes and the game remained tied until Kaitlyn Holland netted the game-winner at 11:11 of the third for the Gusties. Prior to Saturday, the last one-goal game between the two programs was a 1-0 Gustavus victory on Nov. 9, 2018.

The visitors got on the board inside the opening minute when Lily Mortenson put in a rebound after her initial shot was saved just 43 seconds in for Gustavus. St. Olaf struck back just over two minutes later when junior Molly Terebayza got the puck in her own zone, formed a 2-on-1 with sophomore Andi Huseld, and fired the puck in from the right circle to tie the game. The goal was Terebayza's first of the season.

St. Olaf killed off five Gustavus power plays to keep the game tied before Holland buried a one-timer from the left with 8:49 to go for the Gusties. The Oles had a five-minute power play that began less than 30 seconds after Holland's goal but could not find a tying goal.

In her collegiate debut, Olivia Last made 32 saves between the pipes for St. Olaf. Lily Timmons had 19 saves for Gustavus, which held a 34-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

The Oles will be back at St. Olaf Ice Arena for their series opener against the College of Saint Benedict on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.
