Special teams lead women's hockey to 5-0 win over Manhattanville

BOSTON, Mass. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team closed out the Codfish Bowl with a 5-0 victory over first-time opponent Manhattanville University in the consolation game on Sunday afternoon at Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

After falling to fourth-ranked Amherst College in the semifinals on Saturday night, St. Olaf (3-7-1) went 3-for-3 on the power play and killed off all four of its penalties to shut out Manhattanville (2-6-0). The Oles entered the game just 1-for-26 on the power play this season before converting on all three of their chances on their way to a season-high five-goal performance.

First year Nora McConnell, senior Sophie McBane, senior Grace Lankas, and junior Solvei Berg-Messerole all had multi-point effort for St. Olaf offensively, while sophomore Andi Huselid and first year Reese Swanson joined McBane, Lankas, and Berg-Messerole with goals.

First year Baylyn Shankman made it two shutouts in as many collegiate starts by stopping all 25 shots the Valiants got on goal in the game. The victory snapped St. Olaf's eight-game winless streak (0-7-1) that included six losses to nationally-ranked teams.

The Oles struck with two goals in 21 seconds late in the opening period to go into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. Berg-Messerole opened the scoring with the first of St. Olaf's three power-play goals at the 17:10 mark with a shot from outside the two circles off assists from Lankas and junior Molly Terebayza.

Shortly after Berg-Messerole's goal, Swanson tallied her first collegiate goal with a shot from the left point that went through traffic, with fellow first years Nora McConnell and Gianna Kowalkoski picking up helpers on the play. The assist was Kowalkoski's first collegiate point.

After a scoreless second period, McBane extended the Oles' lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal 4:29 into the third to move back into a tie with Berg-Messerole for the team lead with four goals this season. St. Olaf added power-play goals from Huselid and Lankas later in the period to complete the five-goal victory. Huselid's power-play tally just 1:18 after McBane's goal was the sophomore's first of the season.

The Oles will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at home against St. Catherine University on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
