Smith's double-double, big second half lead women's basketball to win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Led by a 26-point, 13-rebound double-double from first year Chloee Smith, the St. Olaf College women's basketball team used a big second half to claim a 67-51 road victory over Hamline University on Monday evening at Hutton Arena.

After trailing 29-22 at the half, St. Olaf (4-16, 3-13 MIAC) outscored Hamline (10-11, 8-9 MIAC) by a 45-22 margin in the second half to secure its first win at Hutton Arena since Dec. 12, 2015. Smith led the second-half charge with 16 points and nine rebounds over the final two quarters as St. Olaf earned its second road victory of the season.

Smith shot 11-for-14 from the field and was 3-for-4 at the free-throw line on her way to a career-high 26 points, while junior Paige Yagodinski added 15 points, including going 3-for-7 from three-point range, and six rebounds in the win. Smith and Yagodinski were the lone double-figure scorers on the night for St. Olaf, which shot an even 50.0 percent (20-for-40) over the final three quarters. The Oles held a 46-33 advantage on the glass, with junior Sarah Tangen pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Oles held Hamline to a season-low 24.2 percent shooting as the Pipers were just 16-for-66 from the field in the game, including going just 4-for-31 (12.9 percent) from behind the arc. Camille Cummings led the Pipers with 12 points off the bench, while Michaela Stamer had 11 points but was just 3-for-13 from the field.

A three-pointer by Yagodinski and a three-point play by Smith accounted for the lone points of the first four-plus minutes but were also the only two made field goals of the opening quarter for St. Olaf. After Smith's three-point play at the 6:19 mark, the Oles missed their final seven shots of the quarter but trailed just 8-7 after 10 minutes. Hamline was just 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from the field in the opening 10 minutes.

Hamline got its offense going in the second quarter, putting 21 points on the board to take a 29-22 halftime lead. Already leading 21-18, the Pipers got a three-pointer from Lauren Cooper and a three-point play by Faith Johnson to open up a 27-18 lead with two minutes to go in the half for the largest lead of the opening 20 minutes. Smith had seven points in the quarter for the Oles.

After an early three-pointer by Lydia Lecher pushed Hamline's lead to 10, St. Olaf went on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to three 2:36 into the third quarter. Later in the quarter, the Oles strung together a 9-0 spurt that began with a Tangen three-pointer to take a 42-36 lead. St. Olaf carried a 42-38 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring Hamline by a 20-9 margin in the third.

Smith and Yagodinski combined for 18 of St. Olaf's 25 fourth-quarter points to help the Oles pull away over the final 10 minutes. The Oles held the Pipers to one point over a stretch of nearly five minutes to turn a 44-43 edge into a 56-44 advantage with 3:40 to go. After Hamline made its first two field goals of the fourth quarter, the Pipers went just 1-for-14 the rest of the way, and St. Olaf made enough free throws to maintain a double-digit lead down the stretch.

The Oles are back at Skoglund Center on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the College of Saint Benedict on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. No admission will be charged for the game.
