Baseball runs scoreless inning streak to 19 in 18-0 win over Purchase

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team extended its scoreless inning streak to 19 during an 18-0 seven-inning victory over Purchase College on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

Sophomore Kevin Steel, first year Nick Levasseur, and senior Brock Brumley combined to throw a six-hit shutout for St. Olaf (8-7) in its second-ever meeting with Purchase (7-8). The Oles also scored multiple runs in all six of their innings at the plate to record their largest margin of victory since a 19-1 win over the University of St. Thomas on May 10, 2009.

Steel picked up his team-leading third win of the season by working around five hits and four walks to toss 5.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Levasseur and Brumley both turned in their fourth scoreless outings in a row in relief, with Brumley striking out one in a 1-2-3 sixth.

Ten Oles had at least one hit, nine scored at least once, and nine drove in at least one run in the win. Senior Sam Lavin led the way offensively be going 2-for-2 with two walks, a triple, three runs scored, and four RBI, while sophomore Breckin Hadley added three RBI. Junior Evan Hammonds and sophomore Jack Pettit both scored three times.

St. Olaf's first three hitters all reached in the bottom of the first to set up a two-run inning, with runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk and an unconventional double play. The Oles added four runs in the second and did so with just one hit thanks, in part, to four walks and a Purchase error.

In the third, St. Olaf drew three more walks as part of a four-run inning to push its lead to 10-0. In the fourth, junior Matthew Kulesa and Hadley delivered RBI doubles and Lavin plated two more with his second triple of the season to extend the Oles' lead to 14-0.

St. Olaf scored twice more in both the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a run-scoring triple off the bat of first year Cole Pleimann in the sixth. The Oles did not strike out once and drew 13 walks in the game from three Purchase pitchers.

After an off day, St. Olaf faces Williams College in a single game at 1 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, March 26 at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
