Undefeated Carleton tops women's tennis in Oles' return to action

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its first match in nearly two weeks, the St. Olaf College women's tennis team was defeated 9-0 by No. 21-ranked Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Wednesday at Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.

Carleton (12-0, 7-0 MIAC) maintained its unbeaten record and dealt St. Olaf (9-3, 3-1 MIAC) its first MIAC defeat of the season with the 9-0 victory. After two of the three doubles matches were decided by just two games, the Knights dropped just 15 games in 12 sets over the six singles matches.

In doubles, St. Olaf's pairs of sophomore Alexandra Berns / junior Fiona O'Flaherty and junior Jane Spading / senior Anna Secor battled to 8-6 defeats at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Carleton's regionally-ranked tandem of Amelia Asfaw and Mary Hose posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The closest two scorelines in singles came in the matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Spading won five games in her 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles, while O'Flaherty claimed four games in her 6-3, 6-1 defeat at No. 4 singles. The loss was O'Flaherty's first of the season after she won her first 10 matches for the Oles.

St. Olaf returns to action against St. Catherine University on Friday, April 12 in a 7:30 p.m. start at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
