Berns and O'Flaherty win in doubles, women's tennis falls to No. 36 Gustavus

OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team was defeated 8-1 by No. 36-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Tuesday evening at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

Sophomore Alexandra Berns and junior Fiona O'Flaherty recorded a win in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to give St. Olaf (10-6, 4-4 MIAC) its lone point of the match. Gustavus (12-10, 6-1 MIAC) won the other two doubles matches and claimed all six singles matches in straight sets.

Berns and O'Flaherty moved to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in MAIC play at second doubles by winning their tiebreaker by a 7-5 margin. The Gusties took the other two doubles matches by 8-4 margins to go into singles with the lead.

Gustavus swept the 12 sets in singles, although two went all the way to tiebreakers. O'Flaherty was dealt just her second loss in 15 matches this season with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 defeat at No. 4 singles, while junior Sarah Clark went down 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 5 singles.

St. Olaf plays its second of back-to-back MIAC matches when it takes on Bethel University on Wednesday, April 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the team's first home on-campus match.
