Johnson, Oles close out unbeaten non-conference slate with fourth shutout in a row

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team made it three shutout wins in as many home games this season with a 3-0 victory over the University of Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (5-0-1) continued its unbeaten start to the season by getting goals from junior Marit Klagge, senior Sadie Klassen, and sophomore Emily Johnson to shut out Northwestern (0-4-1) in the first meeting between the two programs. The Oles outshot the Eagles by a 31-3 margin in the game, including a 12-1 differential in shots on goal. The win was St. Olaf's fourth shutout in a row, as the Oles have outscored their opponents by an 11-1 margin this season.

Klagge gave St. Olaf a 1-0 lead with time winding down in the opening half with her first goal of the season. After controlling a throw-in, the junior dribbled outside the box on the left before swinging the ball in over the head of the Northwestern goalkeeper and in for the third goal of Klagge's career.

The Oles tacked on two goals in the first 15-plus minutes of the second half to build a three-goal cushion. In the 52nd minute, Klassen headed in a cross from Johnson from the right to score for the third time in as many games. Johnson capped the scoring in the 61st minute by getting on the end of a long ball from junior Abbie Manhard and finishing into the far corner from the left side of the box.

The assist was the first of Manhard's career, while Johnson logged her second collegiate game with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Clara Luger and senior Kalle Munger combined for the shutout, with Luger stopping the only shot on goal the pair faced over the 90 minutes. In addition to the 31-3 shot difference, St. Olaf had all 11 of the game's corner kicks.

After closing out an unbeaten non-conference slate, the Oles will open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at Bethel University on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
