Valleau scores twice, women's soccer blanks St. Scholastica on road

DULUTH, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 4-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Kenny Harkins Field.

Led by a two-goal performance by junior Chloe Valleau and a three-assist outing by first year Avery Sames, St. Olaf (7-1-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) improved to 12-1-2 in the all-time series with St. Scholastica (0-8-2, 0-3-0 MIAC) by blanking the Saints for the Oles' seventh shutout in nine games this season. St. Olaf was ranked No. 7 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll.

The Oles outshot the Saints by a 35-2 margin in the game while posting their highest shot total since peppering Finlandia University with 56 shots in a 4-0 victory on Sept. 12, 2021. St. Olaf also enjoyed 67 percent of the possession and had all 11 of the game's corner kicks.

Valleau tallied the lone goal of the opening half in the 27th minute to get the first goal of her first collegiate two-goal game. After a shot by Sames from the top of the box was blocked, Valleau pursued the loose ball with the St. Scholastica goalkeeper and deflected the ball over the line just over a minute after subbing into the game.

St. Olaf doubled its lead just over three minutes into the second half when senior Sadie Klassen tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season with a back-post tap-in off a cross from sophomore Wren VanDeWalker. All seven of Klassen's goals have come in the last six games, and VanDeWalker earned her first collegiate assist on the goal.

The Oles extended their lead to 4-0 with two goals in the space of less than nine minutes later in the half. Junior Megan Timmerman made it 3-0 in the 68th minute with a shot to the top-right corner from the right side of the box for her second goal of the season. Valleau then capped her two-goal outing with her second goal of the game in the 76th minute by firing the ball in under the crossbar after receiving a pass from Sames.

Sophomore Clara Luger had just two saves to make in collecting the shutout victory, while Gracie Meagher had seven saves in the loss for the Saints.

St. Olaf will return home to Rolf Mellby Field for a regionally-ranked matchup with Carleton College on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.
