Smith leads fourth-quarter rally, Knights hold off Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team was unable to complete a fourth-quarter comeback in a 61-55 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

In the lone meeting between the Northfield rivals this season, Carleton (3-14, 2-8 MIAC) led by as many as 15 in the second quarter and was up 12 early in the fourth before St. Olaf (6-11, 0-10 MIAC) mounted a rally. The Oles cut their deficit to three on a three-pointer by sophomore Chloee Smith with 2:06 to go but could not get any closer, as the Knights held on to retain the Presidents' Cup.

Smith led all scorers with a game-high 24 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The sophomore shot 10-for-21 from the field in her seventh 20-point effort of the season, which was her fourth such game in the last five.

Senior Sophia Kormann was also in double figures with 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 shooting at the free-throw line. Senior Sarah Tangen hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with eight points, five rebounds, and two assists. Five student-athletes accounted for St. Olaf's 55 points in the loss.

Audrey Whitney led three Knights in double figures with 18 points while going 4-for-6 from three-point range and 5-for-9 overall. Liesl McCallum added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Addy Huss had 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists for Carleton, which shot 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from long distance after entering the afternoon shooting below 23.0 percent as a team on three-pointers.

Carleton built an 11-2 lead over the first six-plus minutes while St. Olaf missed its first 13 shots from the field before a Kormann layup with 2:12 to go in the opening quarter. Whitney sank a pair of three-pointers in the final 2:04 of the quarter to help the Knights to a 17-6 lead after 10 minutes.

In the second, Carleton pushed its lead to 21-6 a minute and a half in for its largest lead of the afternoon. St. Olaf trimmed its deficit to five with 3:00 left in the quarter with a 7-0 run that included two buckets by Smith and a three-pointer by sophomore Kyla Elsbury, but the Knights finished the half with a mini 5-0 run to take a 30-20 lead at the break. Whitney led all scorers with 11 first-half points after going 3-for-5 from three-point range.

Kormann and Smith combined for 13 of St. Olaf's 16 points in the third quarter, but Carleton added to its lead in the frame to carry a 48-36 lead into the fourth after Liz Hiatt beat the buzzer with a three-pointer. Smith led the Oles' fourth-quarter comeback with 11 of the team's 19 points over the final 10 minutes, but the Knights survived to escape with the win.

Carleton was still up by 10 midway through the fourth before St. Olaf went on an 8-0 run that included three-pointers by Tangen and Smith to get within two with 2:06 left. The Knights got back-to-back stops on the next two Ole possessions and hung on despite a three-pointer by sophomore Joy Brandenstein that made it a 58-55 game with 31 seconds remaining.

St. Olaf will continue a stretch of four home games out of five by hosting the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
