Ronan scores first collegiate goal, Oles fall to Pointers in overtime

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf College women's hockey team dropped the series finale of its season-opening series against UW-Stevens Point by a 2-1 score in the final minute of overtime on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After the teams traded goals past the midway point of the second period, Maddie Andrle won it for UW-Stevens Point (2-0-0) with 51.6 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Pointers the sweep of St. Olaf (0-2-0). First year Mackinley Ronan scored her first collegiate goal in the loss for the Oles.

Prior to the game, St. Olaf recognized its eight-member senior class of Hannah Fritz, MaKenna Beaver, Ivy Ray, Emma Aune, Emma Heath, Solvei Berg-Messerole, Molly Terebayza, and Carley Tuman, as well as their families on the ice for Senior Day.

For the second day in a row, St. Olaf more than doubled up UW-Stevens Point in shots on goal, owning a 42-20 advantage in the category, but the Oles were 0-for-6 on the power play in the loss. Anne Beck made 41 saves to pick up the win for the visitors.

Dani Weiland gave UW-Stevens Point the game's opening goal at 10:38 of the second period, but St. Olaf responded a little over four minutes later when Ronan blasted in a shot from the top of the right circle for her first goal as an Ole. Aune and sophomore Bryn Haugen assisted on Ronan's tally for their first collegiate assists.

The score remained 1-1 until Andrle fired the puck in via the five-hole in the final minute of the extra session. Andrle's game-winner came after the Pointers killed off a 4-on-3 power play earlier in the overtime.

St. Olaf will face another Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe next weekend when it matches up with UW-Eau Claire. Puck drop for the home-and-home series opener is set for 7 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.
