Koltz's late three-pointer breaks tie, Oles top Dutch

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Hallie Koltz hit the tie-breaking three-pointer with 5.7 seconds remaining to give the St. Olaf College women's basketball team a 66-63 non-conference victory over Central College on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

With the score tied at 53-53 after the teams exchanged layups in the final 30 seconds, Koltz sank a three-pointer from the right corner off an assist from junior Joy Brandenstein for the game-winning shot for St. Olaf (3-1). Emily Naughton got a look at a game-tying three-pointer from the top of the key as time expired for Central (4-2), but it came up short of the rim.

Four Oles were in double figures in scoring in a balanced offensive attack, led by 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists from first year Erin Schauer. Sophomore Elise Hahn logged her third double-double in four games this season with 14 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots, and a steal, while Brandenstein added 13 points and four assists while shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range. Koltz's game-winning three-pointer got her into double figures with 10 points.

Naughton led all scorers with 21 points for Central, which also got 11 points and 10 rebounds from CeCe Moore. Maddie Backer added 11 points off the bench for the Dutch.

St. Olaf forced Central into seven turnovers in the first quarter and turned them into five points to take a 13-8 lead after 10 minutes. The Oles held the Dutch to just two minutes over the first six-plus minutes to build a 7-2 lead and got points from six different sources in the opening quarter.

Central got its offense going in the second quarter, shooting 7-for-14 (50.0 percent) from the field in the quarter, to tie the game at 25-25 at halftime. The visitors took their first lead of the afternoon on a transition three-pointer by Bailey Reding with 4:13 remaining in the second, but the Oles held the Dutch scoreless over the final three minutes to send the teams into the locker room tied.

Naughton scored 10 of Central's 16 third-quarter points, but St. Olaf took a 44-41 lead into the fourth. A three-pointer by Brandenstein with 1:22 left in the third gave the Oles a 44-38 lead after a 9-3 run before a three-point play by Naughton made it a three-point game heading to the final 10 minutes.

St. Olaf took a 58-50 lead on a layup by Schauer with 3:56 to go, but Central erased the deficit with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 61-61 on a three-pointer by McKenzie Snook with 55 seconds left. The teams traded layups on the next two possessions before Brandenstein found Koltz for the decisive corner three-pointer.

The Oles will hit the road for a trip to Martin Luther College for a 5:30 p.m. start on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
