St. Kate's downs women's basketball behind big second quarter

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team had three double-digit scorers in a 70-54 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) defeat to St. Catherine University on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

Sophomore Chloee Smith, sophomore Joy Brandenstein, and senior Sophia Kormann all reached double figures for St. Olaf (6-13, 0-12 MIAC), but St. Kate's (10-9, 5-7 MIAC) shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field on its way to the 16-point win. After shooting 31.3 percent (5-for-16) in the first quarter, the Wildcats shot at least 50.0 percent in each of the final three periods.

Smith shot 5-for-12 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, on her way to a team-high 14 points while also recording four rebounds, six steals, two assists, and two blocked shots. Brandenstein knocked down a pair of three-pointers as part of a 12-point outing, while Kormann was 4-for-6 from the field while adding 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals.

Hattie Fox led St. Kate's with 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Rachel Randleman went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc while registering 11 points. Emme Golembiewski had nine points, seven rebounds, four blocks, and three assists as well for the visitors.

Three-pointers by Smith, senior Ziling Zhen, and senior Sarah Tangen helped St. Olaf to an 11-7 lead midway through the opening quarter. The four-point advantage was the largest of the afternoon for the Oles, who led 13-12 after 10 minutes.

St. Kate's shot 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the field and 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from three-point range while outscoring St. Olaf by a 24-7 margin in the second quarter to open up a 36-20 lead at the half. Fox had eight points in the quarter, as the Wildcats' defense held the Oles to just two made field goals in the period.

St. Olaf was unable to make a run in the second half, as St. Kate's led by at least 13 points for the duration of the final two quarters. Brandenstein had 10 of her 11 points in the second half, while Kormann scored eight of her 10 after the break.

The Oles will make the trek to Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a 5:30 p.m. start against the Cobbers.
