MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior
Molly Terebayza scored twice late for the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, but eighth-ranked Augsburg University's 3-0 lead was too much to overcome in a 3-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg (16-2-1, 11-1-0 MIAC) built a 3-0 lead with a goal late in the first period and two inside the first eight minutes of the second and held the 3-0 lead until the final minutes. Terebayza scored twice in the last four minutes to bring St. Olaf (8-10-1, 5-6-1 MIAC) within a goal, but the Auggies held on for the sweep.
Emma Abrahamson opened the scoring for Augsburg at 16:07 of the first period to give the hosts a 1-0 lead after one. Nora Stepan scored just 13 seconds into the second before Aunna Schulte added a third at 7:59 to stretch the Auggies' lead to 3-0 before the midway point of the middle period.
Augsburg maintained the 3-0 lead until St. Olaf made a push late. Terebayza got the Oles on the board with a wrist shot from the low in the left circle with 3:37 remaining before hammering home a slap shot from just inside the zone for an extra-attacker goal with 1:05 to go to make it a one-goal game.
Seniors
Kate Carfagnini and
Hannah Metric picked up assists on Terebayza's second goal, but St. Olaf could not generate another shot on goal after getting the extra attacker on again for the final 55 seconds. Terebayza's two-goal performance was her first of the season and the seventh of her career.
Marissa Paaske made 12 saves in the win for the Auggies, while junior
Hannah Fritz and first year
Baylyn Shankman combined for 26 stops for the Oles. Shankman saved all 14 shots she faced in 29:45 between the pipes and has saved all 62 shots that have come her way in her three appearances this season.
With three series remaining, St. Olaf sits two points out of the fifth and final playoff spot. The Oles will take on the College of St. Scholastica next weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. puck drop in Duluth on Friday, Feb. 7.
