Smith puts up third double-double in a row, women's basketball stymied by Gusties

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Chloee Smith recorded her third double-double in a row for the St. Olaf College women's basketball team in a 66-36 loss to eighth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.

Smith had 10 points and 11 rebounds for St. Olaf (7-15, 1-14 MIAC), which was unable to get its offense going against nationally-ranked Gustavus' (21-1, 14-1 MIAC) seventh-best scoring defense in NCAA Division III that allows just over 47 points per game. The Gusties, who were ranked No. 8 by both D3hoops.com and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) this week, scored 38 of their 66 points off 29 St. Olaf turnovers in the game.

Smith's 10-point, 11-rebound performance was her seventh double-double of the season, as the sophomore was the lone Ole in double figures in scoring on the night. Seniors Sophia Kormann and Sarah Tangen had seven points apiece for St. Olaf.

Gustavus scored the game's first seven points over the opening 2:30 and never relinquished the lead. Rachel Kawiecki scored nine of her 11 points off the bench in the first quarter to spur the Gusties to a 21-8 lead after 10 minutes. Gustavus extended its lead to 33-13 at the half despite shooting just 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from the field in the second quarter by limiting St. Olaf to one made field goal in the period.

Smith scored five of St. Olaf's 12 points in the third quarter and added four more in the fourth to reach double figures for the 10th game in a row. With three made three-pointers in the game, the Oles have 137 makes this season, which ranks 10th in single-season program history.

The Oles will be on the road on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a 1 p.m. start at Macalester College.
