ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell in a 13-point hole after the first quarter and could not recover in a 67-51 loss to Hamline University in its season finale on Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.
Hamline (18-7, 13-5 MIAC) jumped out to a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and led for 37:25 to top St. Olaf (7-18, 1-17 MIAC), which got 20 points from sophomore
Chloee Smith in the loss. The Pipers entered the final day of the regular season having already secured a spot in the six-team MIAC Playoffs.
Smith recorded her ninth 20-point performance of the season by finishing with 20 points and eight rebounds for St. Olaf, as the sophomore knocked down three three-pointers and all five of her free throws in the loss. The 20-point game gave Smith 364 points for the season, which ranks ninth in recorded program history.
In her final game as an Ole, senior
Ziling Zhen shot 4-for-7 from the field while scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds, with six of the seven boards coming on the offensive end. Senior
Sarah Tangen made two three-pointers as part of a seven-point game, while classmate
Sophia Kormann had six point and five boards to end her career.
Ten different Pipers scored in the win, led by 12 points from Camille Cummings and 11 from Sophie Stork, who was 3-for-4 from three-point range. Hamline shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the field and held St. Olaf to 32.0 percent (16-for-50) shooting in the game.
Hamline was 4-for-8 from behind the arc and 9-for-15 (60.0 percent) from the field in a 24-point opening quarter to open up a double-digit lead early. Smith scored seven of St. Olaf's first eight points and combined with Kormann for all 11 of the Oles' points in the first 10 minutes.
Sophomore
Joy Brandenstein had all five of her points in the game, as well as four rebounds and three assists, in the second quarter, as Hamline took a 42-27 lead into the halftime break. The Pipers led by as many as 18 in the third and led by at least 11 for the entire second half.
