Softball tops pair of WIAC foes in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The St. Olaf College softball team picked up an 8-0 six-inning win over UW-La Crosse and a 7-4 victory over UW-Stout to wrap up the dome-portion of its schedule on Saturday at Rochester Regional Stadium and Bubble.

St. Olaf (4-2) used three multi-run innings and 4.2 innings of shutout work from junior Madyn Singleton to shut out UW-La Crosse (4-2) to start the day. Later, the Oles scored all seven of their runs in the fifth and held off UW-Stout (2-4) in the seventh to finish off the 2-0 day.

The Oles will be off until a doubleheader at the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m.

St. Olaf 8, UW-La Crosse 0 (6 inn.) | Box Score

St. Olaf scored twice in the first, twice in the second, and four times in the sixth to claim the run-rule win and avenge a 3-2 loss to the Eagles one week prior. Singleton earned her first victory of the season by holding UW-La Crosse to three hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 4.2 innings of scoreless work before fifth-year senior Jaelyn Orth completed the shutout over the final 1.1 frame.

Senior Medora Rylee reached base all four times by going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, one RBI, and two runs scored, while sophomore Eva Hokanson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Junior Roxanne Ring also knocked in a pair of runs for the Oles.

St. Olaf took advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom of the first to score twice on Ring's two-out, opposite-field single that scored Rylee and fifth-year senior Shreya Ashok. The Oles added two more runs in the third on a one-out RBI single by Hokanson and a two-out, run-scoring double by Singleton.

In the sixth, St. Olaf scored four times to end the game an inning early. Junior Elle Brandt started the scoring with a solo home run for the first homer of her collegiate career. Later in the inning, Rylee plated a run with a single and Hokanson followed with a two-run single to end the game.

St. Olaf 7, UW-Stout 4 | Box Score

Both teams did all of their scoring in one half inning, as St. Olaf scored seven times in the top of the fifth and UW-Stout plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Seven Oles combined for the team's eight hits, as Ashok was the lone St. Olaf batter with two hits in the win.

Ring shut out the Blue Devils over the first 5.0 innings by limiting UW-Stout to four hits and one walk. The junior has not allowed an earned run in 13.2 innings of work this season. First year Amelia Burns and Orth combined to get the last six outs, with Orth getting both of her outs on strikeouts.

In a scoreless game, St. Olaf broke through in the top of the fifth with seven runs on four hits. The Oles scored their first two runs of the frame on fielder's choices before Rylee drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0 before the first out of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Hokanson singled in a run and another scored on an error to push the Oles' lead to 5-0. The final two runs scored on a ground out by Ring and a wild pitch.

UW-Stout did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits before Orth got a swinging strikeout to leave two runners in scoring position and finish off the win.
