Fickenscher goes seven strong, Pointers rally past Oles

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team led 2-0 after five innings before UW-Stevens Point scored the final six runs of the game to come away with a 6-2 victory on Saturday morning at Northeast Regional Park.

In the first meeting between the two programs since 2019, St. Olaf (6-4) scored single runs in the first and fifth and senior Jacob Fickenscher held UW-Stevens Point (4-6) scoreless through five, as the Oles took a 2-0 lead. The Pointers got three runs in the sixth to take the lead and tacked on three more in the ninth.

Fickenscher was dealt his first loss of the season despite allowing just three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Senior Jack Alley had a pair of strikeouts and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Bryce Ehr limited the Oles to one run on four hits over 5.0 innings before three UW-Stevens Point relievers allowed just one hit over the final four frames.

Senior Matthew Kulesa and junior Mason Buck both had a pair of hits in the loss for St. Olaf, with Kulesa also driving in a run. Senior Evan Hammonds had the only other hit and scored a run out of the leadoff spot.

After Fickenscher retired the Pointers in order in the top of the first, Hammonds led off the bottom of the inning with a first-pitch single, advanced to second on a ground out, moved to third on a throwing error, and scored on a ground out off the bat of junior Breckin Hadley. The RBI was Hadley's 10th in 11 games this season.

St. Olaf added a second run in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Sawyer Chell drew a one-out walk and later scored on a single to center by Kulesa, who had his sixth multi-hit game of the season in the loss. UW-Stevens Point answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, getting one on a wild pitch before Kamden Oliver hit a go-ahead two-out, two-run home run to right.

Fickenscher completed seven innings after stranding two runners on base in the seventh before Alley got a swinging strikeout for the final out of the eighth after getting into a bases-loaded jam. The Oles were unable to generate a scoring threat after Buck got to second with two outs in the seventh.

St. Olaf will play Lawrence University in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 23 starting at 11:15 a.m. CDT at Northeast Regional Park.
