Alley goes deep twice, Oles wrap up Florida trip with run-rule win over Colby

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team closed out its Florida trip with a 17-4 run-rule victory over Colby College on Monday at Northeast Regional Park.

After falling behind 3-0 early, St. Olaf (9-5) put together three innings with at least four runs to cruise to the seven-inning victory over Colby (8-4) to finish its trip with a 4-2 record. Senior Jack Alley hit the first two home runs of his career, while junior Mason Buck also hit his first as an Ole.

Alley was 2-for-5 with a walk, two home runs, and five RBI, while Buck was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and four RBI to lead the way offensively for St. Olaf. Senior Evan Hammonds was 4-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI, while junior Breckin Hadley was 3-for-5 with a walk, a triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Matthew Kulesa also became St. Olaf's all-time leader in career hit-by-pitches on his own by getting hit for the 30th time.

Sophomore Kieran Haaland improved to 2-0 on the season after throwing 3.0 shutout innings, scattering six hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Sophomore Carter Follman struck out two and did not allow a hit in his 2.0 innings of shutout relief.

After St. Olaf filled the bases with nobody out but did not score in the top of the second, Colby scored three runs in the home half of the inning to grab the lead, but St. Olaf responded with six runs on seven hits in the top of the third to make the lead short-lived. After Hammonds doubled to start the inning, Buck blasted a two-run home run to left to get the Oles on the board. Later in the inning, Hadley tripled and scored on a single by junior Frank Lavin, who came around to score on Alley's two-run home run one pitch later. Hammonds added an RBI single to cap the inning, as St. Olaf sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame.

The Mules got one run back in the bottom of the third before the Oles opened up a 10-4 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth. After Kulesa reached on a two-base error to lead off the inning, Hadley singled up the middle to score the senior. Lavin followed with a single to put two on for Alley, who hit a three-run shot – his second of the day – to left to give St. Olaf a six-run cushion.

St. Olaf proceeded to score seven runs on just three hits in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter, and a pair of Colby errors in the inning. Buck recorded a two-run, ground-rule double, Hadley drew a bases-loaded walk, and three runs scored on the pair of errors by the Mules.

The Oles are scheduled to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a doubleheader against Hamline University on Monday, March 31 at CHS Field in St. Paul. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
